Tove Lo enlisted quite the crew for her latest release, “Bitches,” off of Blue Lips, featuring appearances from Charli XCX, Elliphant, Icona Pop, and Alma. The crew flips the traditional music video ratio and context on its head, featuring women objectifying a man and a woman to train them how to better perform their, ahem, bedroom duties.

I recognize that this song and its accompanying video were not made for me. I lack the equipment and thus, the experience to qualify enough to speak on what this video means or even what Tove Lo’s gradual journey to the blatantly sexual means. It’s great that she’s stepping out from behind metaphors and carefully veiled language of many of her peers and especially those who came before her. She is saying what she wants in the way she wants to say it. She isn’t sneaking in a bit of allusion here and there. It’s all out all of the time. The only hints she’s dropping are things like, “If you don’t move your tongue correctly, I’m going to drop you like a bad habit.”

If things like “Bitches” trigger accusations of sluttiness, put-downs about easy women, or judgments of character rather than music, then you might need to work on your feminism. This is probably a little awkward for this to be coming from me, but at the moment, I don’t have any female staff available, so I’m a bit stuck because I’d still like to get this out there. (Sidebar: If you identify as a female and you’d like to share your opinions on music and music industry from your perspective, whatever that means to you, I’d like to invite you to submit your info through our Recruitment page and I’ll get you set up as a contributor.)

Check out the video below that Icona Pop explained best with, “Everyone on this track is so different. All are boss ladies in our own way. Together we felt like Spice Girls 2018!” Universe, are you listening? Can we please make that a thing?
