Read our take on the incredible one-two punch that was RÜFÜS DU SOL on Weekend One of Coachella here.
In short, Rufus killed their performance at Gobi on Saturday night, creating a sublime and intimate atmosphere, where Tyrone told the audience about how they were out in the crowd only four years ago, as huge fans of the festival, when they realized that they want to be a part of it in a bigger sense. Well, mission fucking accomplished, boys.
The set was really sweet, and the trio seemed a little surprised at the size of the audience and especially with the crowd’s enthusiasm. I’m sure they’re accustomed to that in Australia, but I don’t think they saw it as strongly as they did at Coachella.
The only problem with their set was that it ended too soon. I wanted more. I began to weigh my options for sticking around Indio for weekend two, when I saw the announcement of their surprise DJ set at The Do Lab stage on Sunday.
They were sandwiched, appropriately, between Le Youth and Lee Foss in late afternoon, as well as the magic hour. The same enthusiastic crowd showed up and were treated to a solid hour and fifteen minutes of 4/4 bliss, featuring their own work remixed alongside the likes of classics from Jay-Z and Everything But the Girl. They clearly felt the magic, too…
In Jon’s words, “The Do Lab stage is a hidden gem at Coachella, what a vibe. On the first weekend we did this secret DJ set there on the Sunday night, played with our friends and family dancing around the stage having a wild time, was a perfect way to end weekend one.”
Today RÜFÜS DU SOL and The Do Lab have released the recording of this iconic set, allowing fans to relive the magic and experience the weekend that represents the band’s complete North American arrival.
Coachella acted as the first in a string of massive dates for the band this summer including Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Red Rocks, Panorama, Firefly, Splash House, Vertex, Osheaga, and more – giving fans across the country the chance to experience the heart-winning ballads and jaw-dropping performances this act has become known for.
