Some days it feels like music production has taken a backseat in Joel Zimmerman’s life. Between driving to get coffee with celebrities and getting into Twitter battles with ______ (fill in the blank), and the construction on his mansion, it seems like he forgot about what got him to that comfortable life in the first place.

Then Armin Van Buuren announced that Deadmau5 will be joining him on the ASOT stage at Ultra this year, with Armin following up on a taunting tweet at Deadmau5, who’d announced that trance was dead. THEN, Joel released a song called “4ware 01” on his fuckmylife SoundCloud account, and I’m impressed all over again. Present are all the elements in the Deadmau5 songs I fell in love with, the floating, reverb-soaked synth, tweaking high atmospherics, and a brooding, intense melody throughout. You know that feeling of stress stemming from one thing or event, and then that thing ends or the event passes, and you have this elated feeling of slow, but steady unwinding? This is what that feeling sounds like.

Hopefully, this is 1) an accurate interpretation, and 2) a sign of things to come.
