Sure, there’s the obvious Halloween theme of React Presents’ annual Freaky Deaky festival, but this year they’ve stepped up their game and introduced a kind of sub-theme: Expansion.
Instead of the traditional weekend affair, Freaky now spans three days and with it, the lineup grew as well. Whether you’re into hip-hop, trance, house, techno, dubstep, or future whatever, they’ve got you covered. Their tagline ought to be, “Got a face? We can melt it!”
Highlights include the obvious, like Bassnectar, Pretty Lights and Armin, but it’s also the perhaps less obvious, like the elusive Gesaffelstein, Richie Hawtin and AlunaGeorge. It’s a seriously dense list of names, and there are two second- and third-level names still to be announced.
And naturally, when you expand the number of days, and the number of artists, then you’re going to need to expand your venue…and expand they did. In 2015, the show’s been relocated out of downtown and out, out, out to Toyota Park, a 28,000 capacity multipurpose stadium which abuts Midway Airport. I wonder if how they’ll manage to combat that kind of noise.
