So I start this off, not knowing exactly how to review this. I was recently offered the opportunity to do a guest review if you will, by a friend. Armin was definitely a new experience for me. I’ve been to dubstep, house and even other trance shows before (please, excuse me for my lack of knowledge of the genres), but nothing beats this one. Armin Van Buuren.
When I first got to the Palladium, the opening DJ was failing. I feel bad for anyone who has to open for Armin, because is anyone really paying attention? Armin is coming and well, frankly it’s just unfair. Unable to muster any of the crowd’s energy, his tracks were dull and had very little appeal to them. Literally nobody was dancing or listening for that matter. And then, it all changed. Armin arrived. It was magical. He played for four and a half hours. FOUR AND A HALF HOURS. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that long of a set, and not once was I bored. Pure awesomeness. I’ve often considered myself a “purist” (yes, and I say that with all the intended snobbery), but there was so much emotion in his music that I could not help but feel as if I was taken by the music. Even I, a musician who knows almost nothing about EDM, was mesmerized. Thanks to him, I’ve been listening to various EDM artists all week of various genres and cannot wait to attend more of these types of shows. Thanks to this magical experience, I have found a new love for electronic music and the community of people who live it.
